Ayurvedic Ophthalmology (Nethrachikitsa)

India has an age old tradition in ophthalmology (Nethrachikitsa in Sanskrit; nethra: eye, chikitsa: therapy, treatment) which is as old as the practice of scientific Ayurveda. It is a sub-speciality of the branch called Shalakyatanthra. Our state of Kerala has a rich background in Nethrachikitsa, academically as well as traditionally. At Sunethri, we provide ayurvedic treatment for diseases/disorders of the eyes with unparalleled expertise and dedication. Shalakyatanthra deals with the health and diseases of head and neck. Ears, nose and paranasal sinuses, throat and oral cavity all come under this along with the eyes. Sunethri being a referral centre of Shalakyatanthra provides treatments for various ailments of these body parts. The general conditions include sensory neural hearing impairment, Menieres disease (with triad of tinnitus or whistling in ears, vertigo, and sensory-neural hearing loss), sinusitis, nasal polyps, loss of smell, recurrent throat infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis etc.), gum bleed, spongy gum, head aches of various origin, and migraine.
